"CRIME AND PUNISHMENT"

Boldfaced statements are parts of the original essay (or a subsequent reply) to which the respondent has directed his comments.

Italicized/emphasized comments prefaced by (R) are those of the respondent and are presented unedited.

My replies appear under the respondent's comments in blue text and are prefaced by my initials (MB).

(R) Read your article and whole heartedly agree with everything you said! It's a crying shame that the system supports the criminal and not the victim. We need more people who think the way that you do instead of the bleeding heart liberals that we have running our judicial system!
(MB) In a democratic system of government, the legal system is supposed to protect all citizens. Accused individuals are protected against false charges and are always given the benefit of any doubt while innocents are supposed to be able to rely on the justice system to punish those who wrong them.
The balance of that system sure seems to have gone out of whack in recent years. We seem to be more interested in rehabilitation of the criminal than in restitution for the victim. It's truly a damned shame.
